The hydraulic ram has a damper operating at the end of a forward stroke, the piston thrusting the fluid into a damper chamber at the cylinder end. The damper also acts as the inlet on the return stroke. The chamber inlet is smaller than the cylinder diameter, and is penetrated by a plug fixed to the piston at the end of the stroke to give the damping effect. A transverse oscillating washer (21) is mounted between the cylinder (2) and the damping chamber (35), so that it can move in the axial direction. It acts as a flap valve restricting the passage for fluid flow when thrust by the fluid towards the damping chamber during the first stroke. On the return stroke, it moves away from the chamber and no restriction takes place.
