Summary:A tool for checking the geometry of an opening in a container in respect of several parameters simultaneously, viz. for the top of a bottle, the bore, ovality, concentricity, dia. and height of the mouth and neck. Basically, the tool comprises a probe mounted in a stiff barrel. The probe is fitted with a head ending in a series of stepped levels of decreasing dias. which progress from larger than the required bare to smaller. A series of concentric sleeves are sized with plane or stepped ends to bear on the top of the neck, the lip of the neck and the shoulders of the bottle respectively. All the concentric components are drilled at levels which will align if the dimensions supporting the probe and the sleeves are all correct. Alignment of the drilled passages is checked by a light beam; if any component is out of line, the beam is interrupted, indicating a defective shape. If the bottle neck is oversize or oval, the probe or sleeve will rest on a stepped face and thus be supported with its passage out of alignment. The tool is used for calibrating the mouths of bottles, moulded containers, etc. More reliable and compact than systems for aligning the components at a series of different positions with several independent heads each checking one dimensions parameter (or successively aligning a series of mobile heads with a stationary bottle).
