The invention relates to a device for handling plates or the like. The device comprises a body part 1 which is displaceable in the horizontal direction Y and a supporting part 2 which is supported thereon and is displaceable in the vertical direction X. Arranged in the supporting part 2 are extensible and retractable members 3 for transferring a plate bundle from a shelf location 4 to the supporting part 2 and vice versa and gripping members 5, which are movable in the vertical direction, for grasping at least one of the plates 7 in the bundle, the said plate resting on the members 3 lying in the retracted position, and for lifting it from the plate bundle and lowering the plate 7 in question between the extensible and retractable members 3 to rest against at least one supporting member 6 on the supporting part 2. In order to achieve a structurally simple and functionally reliable device, the distance between the ends of the extensible and retractable members 3, which ends move to the shelf location 4, has been set to less than the width of the plates 7 present in the shelf location 4.
