Summary:A countertop appliance (10) includes a container. The container includes a lid (44) and a body (40) defining a channel (52). An activation rod (54) is disposed within the channel (52), the activation rod (54) including a magnet and being configured to be translated via the lid (44). An analog magnetic sensor (30) is disposed proximate the magnet and is configured to detect a distance of the magnet relative to the analog magnetic sensor (30). A controller (32) is communicatively coupled with the analog magnetic sensor (30) and is configured to identify when the lid (44) is in a closed position based on a distance of the magnet detected by the analog magnetic sensor (30) or on a change in position of the magnet detected by the analog magnetic sensor (30).
