Abstract The invention relates to a process for producing alpha lithium aluminate comprising the following steps: 1) preparing an aqueous dispersion comprising a fumed alumina, a lithium oxide precursor compound soluble in water and an alkali metal and/or an ammonium carbonate; 2) Spray drying of the dispersion prepared in step 1) to obtain a dried powder; 3) Calcining the dried powder obtained in step 2) at a temperature of from 450°C to 750°C. Lithium aluminate obtainable by this process can be used in lithium ion batteries.
