Abstract In order to solve the problem of providing a composition for forming a gel which is suitable in particular for sealing excavation pits with a sealing floor or for producing a sealing floor, in which in particular the protection of the groundwater is the primary focus, an aqueous composition of this kind is proposed for forming a gel, comprising at least one water glass having a molar modulus in the range of from approximately 2.0 to approximately 4.0 and at least one reactive agent, selected from a group comprising inorganic acids, organic acids and/or esters, wherein the pH value of the composition is in the range of from approximately 7 to approximately 10.5.
