The invention relates to a cutting device for cutting strip materials, in particular a steel strip or a textile strip, and a method for operating the cutting device. The cutting device comprises a cutter assembly; the cutter assembly is provided with a movable upper blade, a non-movable lower blade corresponding to the movable upper blade and a driving device for moving the upper blade, and a cutting point moves from a front cutting area to a rear cutting area of the cutter assembly along a cutting edge of the lower blade during at least one part of the movement of the upper blade; a belt forreceiving and transporting out the cut-off strip material part is connected downstream of the cutter assembly, wherein the belt has an upper return section comprising a position offset by a first angle relative to a horizontal line, and an adjusting device is provided in the region of the cutter assembly, the adjusting device comprising a support arranged below the belt, and the support holds thebelt.
