Summary:A system for determining whether a patient with pulmonary hypertension will resolve the pulmonary hypertension with continued use of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), comprises:a means for measuring one or more pulmonary hemodynamic parameters of a patient with an LVAD to obtain a first pulmonary hemodynamic value;a nitric oxide delivery device configured for, after obtaining the first pulmonary hemodynamic value, administering inhaled nitric oxide to the patient with the LVAD; anda means for measuring one or more pulmonary hemodynamic parameters of the patient during or after the inhaled nitric oxide administration to obtain a second pulmonary hemodynamic value, wherein the nitric oxide delivery device is configured for adjusting the inhaled nitric oxide based on a comparison of the second pulmonary hemodynamic value to a predetermined range, andwherein the pulmonary hemodynamic parameter is selected from left atrial pressure and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure;wherein an increase in left atrial pressure and/or pulmonary capillary wedge pressure from the first pulmonary hemodynamic value to the second pulmonary hemodynamic value of less than 5 mm Hg is indicative of improvement.
