Abstract The image forming apparatus includes a transfer section (421, 423b, 424) that transfers an image to a sheet (S); a sheet conveying member (53a) that is provided on an upstream side of the transfer section (421, 423b, 424) in a conveying direction of the sheet (S) and that conveys the sheet (S); and a control section (100) that controls displacement of the sheet conveying member (53a) such that the sheet (S) is displaced in a width direction of the sheet (S). The control section (100) causes a detection section (54) that detects an edge of the sheet (S) in the width direction to detect the edge of the sheet (S) after displacement of the sheet conveying member (53a) has been started, and causes the displacement to be terminated on the basis of the detected result such that the edge of the sheet (S) reaches a target position.
