Preparation of substituted biphenyl compounds of formula (I), comprises reacting halobenzene compounds of the formula (II) with phenyl boronic acid compounds of formula (IVa) and/or diphenyl boronic acid compounds of formula (IVb) in a solvent or diluent in the presence of a base and a palladium catalyst, which comprises palladium and a bidentate phosphorus ligand of formula (((Ar1) 2P-CH 2-)(R5)C(R4)(-CH 2-P(Ar1) 2)) (III). R1 : NO 2or NH 2; R2 : CN, halo, 1-4C-haloalkyl, 1-4C-haloalkoxy or 1-4C-haloalkylthio; R3 : H, CN or halo; Hal : Cl or Br; Ar1 : phenyl, which optionally contains 1-3 substituents comprising CH 3, CH 3O, F or Cl; either R4, R5 : 1-5C-alkyl or 3-6C-cycloalkyl; or R4R5 : 2-7-membered bridge, which optionally carries 1-8C-alkyl; and n : 0-3.
