Abstract A device (300) for measuring the movement of a patient's body part comprises a patient coil, at least large enough to surround the patient's body part, adapted to conform to the surface of the patient's body part, and adapted to be coupled to, and energized by, a current source, thus creating time-varying magnetic fields. The device further comprises conductive, fixed coils (320,322); and voltage monitoring means connected to the fixed coils, whereby motion of the surface of the patient's body part creates a measurable change in induced voltage in the fixed coils that correlates to the movement of the patient's body part. The fixed coils include an even number of pair-wise matched identical coils, connected electrically in opposite phases, thus cancelling magnetic noise signals from remote magnetic noise signal sources.
