Abstract Device for detecting a tearing-off strip (11) within a material web (12), especially a plastic packing film. The device comprises ultrasonic transmitter (18) and receiver (19) on either side of the film web. The transmitted ultrasound beam is focussed on the area of the film containing the tearing-off strip. If the strip is missing or in the wrong location, a corresponding warning signal is generated. An Independent claim is made for a method for detecting the tearing-off strip in packaging film in which an ultrasonic receiver detects a change in the intensity of detected ultrasound due to the absence of the strip.
