The silencer consists of a sleeve (11) inserted in the exhaust pipe that has an integral Helmholz resonator. This has a number of chambers (13) coupled by tapered orifices (12). The greater the included angle of the taper the thinner the wall section (s) of the sleeve tube for a required resonance frequency. Die Erfindung betrifft einen Schalldämpfer (10), insbesondere einer Brennkraftmaschine, vorzugsweise einer aufgeladenen Brennkraftmaschine, wobei wenigstens ein schallführendes Element wenigstens eine Resonatorkammer (13a,13b) enthält, die durch ein Lochblech (11) vom korrespondierenden Strömungskanal getrennt ist und dadurch nach dem Prinzip eines Helmholtz-Resonators aufgebaut ist, wobei das Lochblech (11) im direkten Bereich der darin angeordneten Löcher (12) an wenigstens einem Loch eine veränderte Wandstärke aufweist.
