Abstract An automotive air conditioning system 10 is provided that includes a duct 12 for introducing a flow of air into a vehicle cabin and a closed-loop refrigeration circuit that includes a condenser 30 and an evaporator 16. The improvement comprises a temperature sensor 68 arrange in the duct 12 for remotely measuring the temperature of the evaporator 16 and a control unit 18 for selectively commanding operation of the system 10 in accordance with the measured temperature of the evaporator 16. In a preferred embodiment, the temperature sensor 68 comprises an infrared (IR) temperature sensor that is remotely positioned downstream of the evaporator 16 such that the sensor 68 can measure the temperature of a downstream surface 70 of the evaporator 16. The use of an infrared temperature sensor allows the temperature of substantially the entire downstream surface 70 of the evaporator 16 to be measured instead of a small finite area of the evaporator 16.
