Described are a card transport mechanism for a printer and a printer that can be easily and optionally equipped with such mechanism to enable printing on card type print media. To that end a card transport mechanism structured as a single unit (CTU) is provided to be installed in the printer. This card transport mechanism is sufficiently durable to avoid changes in the card feed amount over time, and adapted to execute the card positioning, card holding, card transport, and card holder release operations used to print any number of plural lines to a card type print medium. This printer comprises a slider (8) for moving the print medium; a card holder lever (14) pivoting on the slider for holding the card on the slider; a frame (5) for guiding the print medium to the slider for slidably supporting and guiding the slider; and means (6, 7) for moving the slider in the card transport direction.
