Process for the preparation of orthohydroxymandelic acid, and of its salts, in which glyoxylic acid is reacted with phenol in the presence of a tertiary amine and of catalytic amounts of trivalent metal cations, to produce the expected product which is isolated and, if desired, converted to a salt.
