Summary:Described is a nozzle configuration for an ink-jet printer in which the unshielded intervals between the drop-formation nozzle (1), the charging electrode (3) and the deflection plates (7) are chosen to be maximally 0.1 - 2 mm while further in the passage of the charging electrode (3) a discharge aperture is present which connects to a channel (4) for removing ink or other medium by suction. Also is described a process for operating said nozzle configuration in which during starting and/or stopping thereof medium is transported through the channels (4, 4 min , 4 sec ) connecting to the charging electrode (3). The medium may be air and/or a protective fluid.
