Abstract A method of controlling a wind turbine (3), the method comprising: evaluating an active power capability of the wind turbine (3) in accordance with an operating state of the wind turbine (3); determining a derate function (30) for the wind turbine (3) in accordance with the evaluated active power capability, the derate function (30) defining at least one active power limit when a threshold value for at least one ambient condition is exceeded; and determining one or more active power references for the wind turbine (3) in accordance with the derate function (30).
