Abstract 1468961 Spray nozzle TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc 22 Feb 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 8268/74 Heading B2F A spray nozzle includes a hollow housing having an inlet and a first group of spray discharge outlets 44; means in the housing defining a first passage in the housing extending from the inlet to the first group of discharge outlets: a valve member 54 mounted in a space affording part of the first flow passage operable by water flowing through the first flow passage to intermittently interrupt flow from the inlet to each outlet of the first group of outlets thereby to cause a pulsating spray to be discharged therefrom; the housing having a second group of spray discharge outlets 34 and means in the housing extending from the inlet to the second group of discharge outlets, the second flow passage bypassing the valve member and communicating directly with the second group of outlets whereby water flowing through the second flow passage is discharged from the second group of outlets in continuous non-pulsating streams. The valve member 54 comprises an annular turbine unit which is rotated by fluid flow through tangentially-directed passages 50 and thus interrupts the flow to units of the first group of outlets 44 as a flat plate portion 56 of the valve member moves over surface 42 containing outlets 44. The second flow passage is formed by channels 48, which bypass the valve member 54, and grooves 34 formed in lower housing 20, which are sealed to form orifices by a washer 36 fittting inside housing 20. Water may be directed through these two passages and through a third passage, which passes through the centre of the valve member without substantially affecting its rate of rotation, by a flow-directing plate 62 which has arcuate openings corresponding with the three flow passages. Flow through the passages is controlled by an annular shutter plate 84, moved by the user of the device by means of a control ring 112 and a gear mechanism, and which has blades for closing the openings allowing continuous flow alone, a mixture of continuous and pulsating flow or pulsating flow alone. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1430123.
