Summary:The treatment of a liq. carrying solids in suspension and/or colloidal solids comprises mixing the liq. (12) in an agitated vessel (11A) with a coagulating agent (13A), at a controlled dosing rate, and mixing in a second agitated vessel (11B) with an insol. granular material (15A), denser than the liq.. Turbulence is maintained while the colloidal and suspended particles form aggregates with the granular material. The solids are sepd. from the liq. in a decantation vessel (21), where clear liq. is recovered (22) and the muds, consisting of aggregates of granular and colloidal material are collected (23). The decanter is sized so the flow has an average decantation speed of at least 15 m/h. The granular material is sepd. from the mud (15A) and reused.
