Sheets of transparent plastic and glass coated with polythiophene or soluble polythiophene salts (I) are useful as heat protection windows; polymers (I) contain units of formula (II); R1, R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl or R1+R2 = opt. substd. 1-4C alkylene. Pref., R1, R2 = H or Me, or R1+R2 = opt. alkyl-substd. CH2, opt. 1-12C alkyl- or Ph-substd. CH2CH2, or 1,2-cyclohexylene; the prodn. of (I) and coatings thereof is described in DE-OS 3813589 and EP-A 440957; coatings 0.2-10 microns thick are produced on glass or plastic sheet or film, e.g., PMMA or polycarbonate, and pref. coated with acrylic or polyurethane varnish, etc. to protect against mechanical damage. USE/ADVANTAGE - Apart from their known use as antistatic coatings, (I) are also excellent IR absorbers, while being almost completely transparent to visible light and resistant to UV; (I) are therefore useful for the prodn. of heat protection windows.
