Novel substituted thiazoles and oxazoles, medicaments containing these compounds and processes for their preparation

The invention relates to novel thiazoles and oxazoles of the general formula I in which R1 to R4, R and X are as defined in Claim 1, their optical isomers and their diastereomers and also their acid addition salts. The novel compounds of the general formula I, in which R represents a hydrogen atom, and their optical antipodes are useful intermediates for the preparation of other compounds of the general formula I in which R represents a group of the formula where A and R5 are as defined in Claim 1. These compounds, their optical isomers and their diastereomers and also their acid addition salts, in particular their physiologically tolerable acid addition salts with inorganic or organic acids, have useful pharmacological properties, namely an effect on the metabolism, preferably a hypoglycaemic and body fat-reducing effect. The novel compounds of the above general formula I can be prepared by processes which are known per se.
