Copolyesters of the formula I in which R is from 60 to 85 mol% of 1,3-phenylene radicals, from 5 to 20 mol% of tetramethylene radicals and from 10 to 20 mol% of, for example, radicals of the formula IIa R is from 60 to 95 mol% of ethylene radicals (-CH2CH2-), from 0 to 28 mol% of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylene radicals and from 5 to 12 mol% of polyoxyethylene radicals having a mean molecular weight of up to 600, R is, for example, SO3H, E and E are, for example, -OH, and n is a number so large that the copolyester has a mean molecular weight of between 15000 and 40000, are used in the form of their aqueous solutions as sizing agents (sizes).
