Abstract The actual charge state of accumulators having an electrolyte which takes part in the electrochemical conversion (e.g. a lead-acid accumulator) is determined in that the charge taken up to a specific point in time from the accumulator having the useful capacity (KN) is measured both in terms of electron charge levels (= KC) as well as via the change in the electrolyte density (KD). The weakening of the electrolyte in the plate pores results in a difference KC-KD = DELTA K. The residual charge (KR) which is in reality still available - the current charge state - follows from the relationship KR = KN-KC- alpha DELTA K, in which the proportionality constant alpha , which is a function of the structure, has a value between 1 and 1.2. The charge values corresponding to the charges KC and KD removed and the current charge value KR corresponding to these values can be signalled on a three-row scale by means of measuring marks (1, 2, 3).
