1400643 Topical compositions PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 4 April 1973 [5 April 1972] 16080/73 Heading A5B A composition suitable for topical application to animal tissue comprises (1) at least 0.1% by weight of a sugar ester; and (2) at least 0.1% by weight of a sulphoxide of formula R1S(O)R2 wherein R1 is a straight or branched chain alkyl or hydroxy-substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbont atoms, and R2 is an alkyl or hydroxy-substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; or a phosphine oxide of formula R3R4R5P(O) wherein R3 is an alkyl or hydroxy-substituted alkyl grup having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and R4 and R5, which may be alike or different, are each an alkyl or hydroxy-substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compositions may also contain one or more pharmacologically active compounds selected from antimicrobial and antifungal agents, antibiotics, steroids, astringent metal salts, antimetabolites, vitamin A, sunscreering agents, local anaesthetics and rubifacient oils. A large number of particular active agents are specified.
