Summary:A catalyst composition (I) for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in an ethylene-based mixture, containing 0.005-2.0 wt% palladium as catalyst and 0.001-2.0 wt% silicon as modifier dispersed on a support comprising aluminium, titanium or silicon oxide or silicon oxide-aluminium oxide. Also claimed is (i) a process for the production of (I), and (ii) a process for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene by reacting ethylene with an acetylene content of 0.5-2.0 wt% on catalyst (I).
