The work top comprises a chip board core plate having transition part (2) including a top upward protuberance (7) protruding from its top side (4) to a longitudinal narrow side (5). The protuberance leads via a rounded profile (15) into the narrow side. A lengthwise groove (8) sloping away from the narrow side and leading from the plate underside (6) contains a wedge-shaped strip (11) forming the upward protuberance. A decorative layer (3) is stuck onto the top and narrow sides of the core plate. The underside of the core plate has a flat cavity (12) extending over the base of the wedge-shaped strip and starting from the narrow side. The narrow side leads via a rounded profiled part (14) into the base (13) of the cavity. The bottom of the cavity is also covered with the continuous decorative layer.
