Summary:1,257,201. Catheter assembly. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. 11 June, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 29578/69. Heading A5R. A catheter placement unit comprises a hollow needle 8 having an integral hub 10, a catheter 2 having a catheter hub 4 and containing a stylet (16) attached at one end to a holder 18, such that the catheter either passes through the needle 8 and hub 10 or encloses the needle 8, and a container 6 for the catheter 2 and catheter hub 4 having an outlet 20 and an actuator for feeding the catheter through the outlet. The container comprises two halves removably interconnected, in which the actuator may comprise a rotatable drum (22) which also serves as one half of the container. In another embodiment (Fig. 8) the actuator comprises a flexible tube attached to the outlet and the container forms a conical bottle. In a third embodiment in which the needle passes through the catheter (Fig. 9) the actuator (98) comprises a projection extending through the wall of the outlet for reciprocation along the outlet. The catheter 2 hub 4, and stylet 16 can be removed by separating the two halves to expose an axial slot (40) through which the catheter can pass or by pulling the catheter and hub through the outlet (Fig. 8). The stylet 16 can be removed from the catheter. The catheter may have graduations so that its degree of penetration into the patient may be determined.
