Summary:Adhesive compositions comprise a liquid solvent and an interpolymer comprising 40 to 99.9% by weight of at least one alkyl acrylate in which the alkyl group contains at least 4 carbon atoms, up to 60% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of an alkyl carboxylic acid in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an aryl carboxylic acid, and 0.1 to 5% by weight of a compound of formula: <FORM:0955420/C3/1> where R2 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen, an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a furyl group and R4 is hydrogen or a methyl group. Specified acrylates are butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, 2-ethylhexyl, octyl, nonyl and decyl acrylates. Specified vinyl esters are the vinyl esters of acetic, propionic, butanoic and pentanoic acids. Specified etherified alkylolamides are the ethers of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isobutanol and pentanol with N-methyl acrylamide and N-methylol methacrylamide. Specified solvents are isopropyl acetate, aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkanols, acetone and ethyl acetate. The interpolymers may be prepared by interpolymerizing the monomers in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, t.butyl hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide, di t.butyl peroxide, dicumyl-peroxide or azo-bisisobutyronitrile; or in aqueous emulsion in the presence of emulsifiers and stabilizers and catalysts such as potassium persulphate. The compositions may be applied to fibrous and non-fibrous substrates, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polychloroprene, polyester, regenerated cellulose and cotton cloth, and the coatings dried to provide pressure sensitive adhesive tapes and sheets. Diversity in the polymerization rates may be counteracted by adding the acrylate and etherified alkylolamide at a controlled rate to the vinyl ester, or by controlled addition of all the monomers throughout the interpolymerization. Examples describe the interpolymerization, with gradual addition of monomer, of vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and N-butoxymethyl acrylamide in (I and IV) ethyl acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, (III) isopropyl acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and (V) water, hydroxyethyl cellulose, an alkylaryl polyether alcohol, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, potassium persulphate and sodium borate.ALSO:Fibrous and non-fibrous substrates, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, polychloroprene, polyester, regenerated cellulose and cotton cloth, are coated with adhesive compositions comprising a liquid solvent and an interpolymer of 40-99,9% by weight of at least one alkyl acrylate in which the alkyl group contains at least 4 carbon atoms, up to 60% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of an alkyl carboxylic acid in which the alkyl group contains 1-5 carbon atoms or an aryl carboxylic acid, and 0,1-5% by weight of a compound of formula <FORM:0955420/B1-B2/1> where R2 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen, an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a furyl group and R4 is hydrogen or a methyl group. Specified acrylates are butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, 2-ethylhexyl, octyl, nonyl and decyl acrylates. Specified vinyl esters are the vinyl esters of acetic, propionic, butanoic and pentanoic acids. Specified etherified alkylolamides are the methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isobutanol and pentanol ethers of N-methylol acrylamide and N-methylol methacrylamide. Specified liquid media are ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, acetone, alkanols, hydrocarbons and water. After application the coatings are dried to give pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes and sheets. Examples describe the coating of (I) sheets of polyvinyl chloride, terephthalate polyester, regenerated cellulose, polychloroprene and cotton cloth with an ethyl acetate solution of an interpolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and N-butoxymethyl acrylamide, and (V) sheets of polyvinyl chloride with an aqueous dispersion of an interpolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and N-butoxymethyl acrylamide.
