Abstract 1,163,433. Felt nib pens. ARTHUR D. LITTLE Inc. 28 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965; 10 May, 1966], No. 34007/66. Heading A4K. [Also in Divisions B3, C1, C7, D1, F2 and F4] A capillary device suitable for use in pens, is produced by weaving filaments together into braid and bonding adjacent filaments to each other substantially only at each of their points of intersection, e.g. by means of heat, solvents or adhesives, to produce a rigid capillary structure capable of feeding liquids in both axial and radial direction. The capillary device may be made up from a plurality of concentric braids. A small passageway may be provided in the centre of the braid by braiding the filaments around a core piece which is removed after the braid has beeen bonded, a suitable core being a fine filament which is unaffected by the bonding agent, or a soluble filament which is dissolved out after bonding. Strong mechanical structures may be produced by permanently including one or more filaments in the central passageway of the braid when braiding. The flow of liquid through the capillary device may be improved by using filaments having different diameters or non-circular cross sections, by using some soluble filaments, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol filaments which may be leaded out of the braid by means of a water bath, or by incorporating water soluble materials e.g., sugar, in the solvent or adhesive which are removed after the bonding of the braid. Suitable filaments are those of synthetic resins, e.g. polyamides, polyacetates, polycarbonates, polyolefins or polytetra fluoroethylene, which may be bonded by heat, solvents e.g. resoranol or adhesives, of metals e.g. stainless steel which may be bonded by heat, adhesives, e.g. epoxy or phenolic resins, or the electrolytic deposition of metals from solution onto the braid, or of glass which may be bonded by heat or adhesives, e.g. an epoxy resin dissolved in methyl ethyl Ketone, one end of the braid may be sharpened to a fine point and the other end of the braid connected to a reservoir of writing fluid.
