Abstract An additive for a lubricating oil comprises an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyamine having at least one alkyl or alkenyl group of at least 50 carbon atoms linked to a nitrogen atom. Generally, 0.1 to 10% by weight of additive is added to the oil which may be a mineral lubricating oil, a synthetic lubricating oil or a lubricating oil containing a fatty oil. Conventional antioxidants, detergent additives, viscosity-index improvers, anti-corrosives, anti-foaming agents and agents to improve the lubricating effect may be added. In the example, polyisobutenyltetraethylenepentamine is added to a solvent-refined paraffinic lubricating oil distillate and then tested in a diesel engine and a gasoline engine.ALSO:An aliphatic amine suitable for use as a lubricant additive is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyamine having at least one alkyl or alkenyl group of at least 50 carbon atoms linked to a nitrogen atom. It may be prepared by chlorinating a polymer of an alkene having a terminal double bond whose beta carbon atom carries a methyl group, and reacting the resulting alkenyl chloride with a polyamine. In the example, polyisobutylene is chlorinated and the polyisobutenyl chloride obtained is heated with tetraethylenepentamine to produce polyisobutenyl tetraethylenepentamine.
