Summary:In a process for the extractive fractionation of hydrocarbon mixtures containing aromatics, for example a catalytically reformed hydrocarbon fraction or a heavy kerosine, involving the use of cyclic sulphones or cyclic sulphoxides, for example sulpholane, as selective extracting agents, the recovery of the extracting agent is carried out by washing the raffinate phase with water, fractionating the extract phase by distillation into an aromatic fraction, which is washed with water, and an extracting agent fraction, which is recycled, withdrawing a portion of the recycle extracting agent fraction as slipstream and washing it with water, distilling the resulting mixtures of water and extracting agent, and returning the pure extracting agent obtained as bottoms product to the extraction system. The operations of washing the aromatic fraction and slipstream may be combined. The mixture of water and extracting agent obtained by washing the raffinate may be added to the slipstream prior to it being washed.
