Abstract 1,093,239. Selective signalling. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. June 20, 1966 [June 24, 1965], No. 27408/66. Heading G4H. A cyclic-binary to pure-binary code converter exploits the magneto-resistive property of thin magnetic films. As described, each of three thin magnetic films 10, 12, 14, Fig. 2, has the property that the resistance across a film, e.g. from a conductor 16 to the input of an amplifier 50, is a minimum when the film is not subjected to a magnetic field, but increases when current is passed through (either positively or negatively) a vertical conductor, e.g. 22, inductively coupled to the film. In the quiescent state of the circuit shown, current flows from a battery 38, across film 10, through amplifier 50 and via a vertical conductor inductively coupled to film 12, the effect of this current on film 12 is, however, nullified by a steady bias current through a second vertical conductor 28 also inductively linked to film 12. A similar current flows from a battery 40 and sees film 12 in its low resistance condition because the net field applied to it is zero. In operation, the bits of the cyclic-binary word are applied to vertical conductors 22, 24, 26, inductively coupled to the films. This changes the resistive states of some of the films and these changes are detected by detectors 32, 34, 36 to provide the pure-binary output bits. Each current that is applied to the vertical conductors to represent a bit of the cyclic-binary code is such that its inductive effect on a film is nullified if the preceding film changes its resistivity state. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), A.C. coupling is used between films.
