Summary:A DNA encoding a protein or polypeptide with an effect of converting 1-propenylsulfenic acid into a lachrymator, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a primer for isolating the lachrymator synthase gene of a plant belonging to genus Allium, which contains a sequence of (XXV) comprising 26 base pairs; (2) isolating the Allium lachrymator synthase gene by using the primer; (3) a recombinant vector containing any of the DNAs; (4) a transformant containing the recombinant vector; (5) producing the protein or polypeptide with lachrymator synthase activity; (6) a protein or polypeptide with lachrymator synthase activity containing: (a) an amino acid sequence of (II), (VI), (VIII), (X), (XIV) or (XVI) comprising 164-169 amino acids; (b) an amino acid sequence based on the sequence of (II), (VI), (VIII), (X), (XIV) or (XVI) but with some amino acids added, deleted or substituted; or (c) an amino acid sequence comprising 65 % homology with the sequence of (II), (VI), (VIII), (X), (XIV) or (XVI); and (7) a nucleic acid molecule with a function of inhibiting the translation of mRNA concerning the protein or polypeptide. ACTIVITY : Ophthalmological. No biological data given. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
