Abstract The present invention provides for a zinc-based negative electrode (i.e., anode) for an alkaline electrochemical cell. The negative electrode comprises zinc powder suspended in a gelling agent. The zinc powder has an average particle size substantially greater than 25 micrometers, and preferably has an average particle size of 150 micrometers or smaller. The zinc powder has less than 1 weight percent zinc dust of a particle size less than 25 micrometers. The cell achieves enhanced cell discharge performance at high rate discharge, while minimizing gassing.
