Summary: | A cryogenic cooling system includes a vacuum chamber, a first support system for a cooling plate in the vacuum chamber, and a second support system for a thermal radiation shield in the vacuum chamber. A plurality of mutually parallel cooling plates are connected to and supported by the first support system, the cooling plates being displaced from each other in a first direction. The first direction is defined as a direction perpendicular to the cooling plate. A plurality of at least partially nested thermal radiation shields are connected to and supported by the second support system. Each of the thermal radiation shields is configured to shield a respective subspace adjacent to a corresponding one of the cooling plates. At least a first of the cooling plates is a modular cooling plate comprising two or more segments adjacent to each other on the same level in the first direction, the segments being connected to the first support system independently of each other.
