Abstract | The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (12) having an exhaust gas manifold (20) through which exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine (12) can flow and having a secondary air system (22) having a secondary air duct (24) through which air as secondary air can flow in a blowing-in direction (26), the secondary air duct (24) is arranged in the exhaust manifold (20) such that secondary air flowing through the secondary air duct (24) in the blowing-in direction (26) can be introduced into the exhaust manifold (20). According to the invention, a valve element (10) is provided which is arranged in the secondary air duct (24) and which has a first flow resistance in the blowing-in direction (26) and a second flow resistance, which is greater than the first flow resistance, in a counter-flow direction (28) opposite the blowing-in direction (26), such that a counter flow in the counter-flow direction (28) can be at least limited.
