Abstract The invention relates to a drug delivery device with an electric brushless DC or stepping motor. A novel motor control method uses a micro-step technique in combination with transposing the stepping motor and reversing the rotor for a small number of micro-steps per delivery cycle. This method has the effect of maintaining the elasticity of the drive train behind the plunger in a relaxed state after completion of the delivery cycle, thereby providing better control of the movement of the rotor. Step loss can be avoided for a wide range of friction or velocity conditions, thereby improving the accuracy of drug delivery and making tracking rotor position and detecting step loss be much better parameters for detecting clogging or clogging.
