Polyester-free cotton is obtained from fabrics and/or fibers containing polyester and cotton by reacting the fabrics and/or fibers with an amine organo-catalyst and/or a carboxylate thereof and an alcohol solvent. Recovery of reactions that can be carried out intermittently or as a continuous flow process: (i) polyester-free cotton as a solid inert by-product of the reaction, (ii) amine organo-catalyst and/or carboxylate salt thereof for reuse, (iii) polyester monomer product, and (iv) unreacted alcohol.
