Abstract A lignin composition derived from wood is disclosed. The invention relates to a wood-derived lignin composition comprising:-80 to 90% by weight, based on the total dry matter content of the lignin composition, of an acid-insoluble lignin wherein the lignin has an average molecular weight of 5000 to 15000 Da; -1.5-15% by weight, based on the total dry matter content of the lignin composition, of a carbohydrate; 0.2 to 1.5 wt.% of nitrogen, based on the total dry matter content of the lignin composition; and wherein the weight ratio of oxygen to carbon is at least 0.5.
