A method for extending a new radio (NR) usage indication to an application function (AF) includes receiving, at a policy and charging rules function (PCRF) including at least one processor, an indication of NR usage of a user equipment (UE). The steps further include determining that the AF subscription receives an indication of NR usage by the UE. The steps further include transmitting an indication of NR usage to the AF in response to determining that the AF subscription receives the indication of NR usage by the UE. The steps further include receiving a message from the AF to effect a change in service provided to the UE based on the indication used by the NR.
