Abstract The invention relates to a distance measuring system (10). A light source (18) emits light with a specified wavelength onto a coupling region (24) which is designed with a coupling diffraction structure (26) and couples the light into a carrier medium (12) in the direction of a measuring region (28). The measuring region (28) is designed as a combination of an emission diffraction structure (30) and a receiving diffraction structure (32), and the emission diffraction structure (30) decouples the coupled light into a measuring volume to be monitored in order to produce a reflection at an object outside of the carrier medium. The receiving diffraction structure (32) couples the reflected light which is incident on the receiving diffraction structure (32) from outside the carrier medium into the carrier medium (12) in the direction of a detector region (34).
