The invention relates to a control system (10) for a tool (12) and a machine tool (14) compatible with the tool (12), comprising: a first plug connector (16) for connecting the control system (10) to a tool-side interface (18) to which a respective sensor (20) of the tool (12) is connected; a second plug connector (22) for connecting the control system to an interface (24) of the machine tool (14); a data processing means (26), which is designed to receive a sensor signal provided by means of the sensor (20) via the first plug connector (16) and to carry out a state monitoring in real time on the basis of the received sensor signal; and a control device (28), which is designed to control the tool (12) by means of the first plug connector (16) and/or the machine tool (14) by means of the second plug connector (22) as a function of the state monitoring. The invention further relates to a method for operating the control system (10), which control system (10) is connected via its plug connector (16, 22) to a too
