Summary:The invention relates to a tool drive (1) having a spindle shaft (3) for a chip-removing machining, comprising at least one axial electromagnetic actuator and a control and/or regulating device (16) for the operation of the axial actuator for the change in position in a longitudinally axially manner of the spindle shaft (3). The control and/or regulating device (16) is designed to control the axial actuator for producing a micro-vibration movement of the spindle shaft (3) independently of and superimposed to a feed so as to influence the chip size and chip form of the material removal. It is proposed that at least one axial magnetic bearing (14) and/or a linear motor is/are provided as at least part of the axial actuator. In a secondary aspect, an operating method for an above-mentioned tool drive (1) having a spindle shaft (3) and an axial magnetic bearing (14) is proposed, wherein an adjustable axial microvibration movement of the spindle shaft (3) is superimposed by at least one axial electromagnetic actua
