Abstract Wire electric discharge method comprises adding an estimated discharge gap and minimum gap between work and wire electrode required to avoid short-circuit, and performing program check determining estimated wear amount. A wire electric discharge method comprising adding to the machining conditions an estimated discharge gap (g(n)) and an estimated minimum gap (gmax(n)) between a work (1) and a wire electrode (2) required to avoid a short-circuit, reading these quantities during program check determining an estimated wear amount (m(n)) during the n-th machining from the estimated discharge gap (g(n)), the moving amount (y(n)) of the wire electrode (2) toward the work (1) and the wire electrode diameter (d), and displaying on the display (17) the estimated wear amount (m(n)) during the n-th machining and the estimated minimum gap (gmax(n)) between the work and the wire electrode at which a short-circuit can be avoided during the n-th machining.
