The invention relates to a high-efficiency streaming media playing system and a method, which relate to the multimedia technical field, comprising an encoder end, a first streaming media server, a second streaming media server, a relay station and a client; the encoder end collects audio and video information, and stores, compresses, encodes and converts the collected original information into final audio and video information of streaming media format. The first streaming media server, the second streaming media server and the relay station are communicatively connected, and the client end and the relay station, the second streaming media server establish data communication connection. The client sends a playback request to the relay station. After receiving the request, the relay stationselects the first stream media server to connect with the encoder end and receives the final audio and video information uploaded by the encoder end.
