Abstract The invention discloses a negative electrode material of a lithium ion battery. The negative electrode material is nitrogen-doped carbon-modified lithium titanate; the lithium titanate has the particle size range of 0.1-2[mu]m, carbon content of 5-8wt% and nitrogen content of 0.1-1.2%. Compared with the conventional method for synthesizing lithium titanate by calcining a titanium source and a lithium source, a crosslinking reaction of hydrolytic tetrabutyl titanate and melamine is performed firstly in the method disclosed in the invention, and the generated titanium-based polymer is used as the titanium source, so that consistency of distribution of nitrogen, carbon and titanium elements is ensured, thereby reaching uniformity higher than that of the conventional coating means; the negative electrode material of the lithium ion battery has a simple preparation process and low equipment requirement; and the raw materials adopted in the preparation process are low in cost, and preparation of a lithium titanate
