Abstract The invention relates to a method for extracting alkaloids in leaves of Ipomoea muricatum. Reflux extraction is carried out under specific conditions using acidic ethanol, various alkaloids in the leaves of Ipomoea muricatum can be converted from alkaloidal salts into alkaloids under acidic conditions that dissolve in the ethanol and are extracted out, acid water is added, enabling free alkaloids to turn into salts dissolving the acid water, liposoluble ingredients are thus separated, pH of acid and alkali treatment liquid is further controlled to 9-10, the alkaloidal salts are freed out, extracting is carried out with an organic solvent, and total alkaloids are obtained. The extraction rate of the total alkaloids in the leaves of Ipomoea muricatum is not lower than 5 wt%, the inventor's further study shows that the total alkaloids extracted from the leaves of Ipomoea muricatum are significant in bioactivity and effective in enriching yin and nourishing kidney, clearing heat and removing toxicity, diminishing
