Abstract The present invention relates to an apparatus (18) for detecting different subjects (10, 10') on the basis of vital signs, comprising: an image detection unit (22) for detecting radiation (20) from a field of view (40) and for providing image data (24) from the field of view (40), a detection unit (26) for defining image sections (46) in the image data (24) and for detecting movement pattern in the different image sections (46), an identification unit (28) for identifying vital signs in the different image section (46) on the basis of the movement pattern, and an analysis unit (32) for analyzing the image data (24), wherein the analysis unit (32) is adapted to detect the different subjects (10, 10') in the field of view (40) on the basis of a spatial separation of the image sections (48, 50, 54, 56) or of groups of image sections (52, 58) in which the vital signs are identified.
