Abstract | Disclosed is a solid polymer electrolyte which has excellent proton conductivity, while being improved in heat resistance. Also disclosed is a proton conducting membrane which is composed of such a solid polymer electrolyte. Specifically disclosed is a copolymer having a sulfonic acid group, which is characterized by containing a repeating unit represented by the following general formula (1).
